The return of Doctor Who was wonderful for me. I truly missed having a new episode of the Doctor to watch. Once into it all, I felt like it was all just a normal episode: chaos, destruction, a known enemy, a timeline to maintainÉ. It was all rather formulaic. But then the end came. The endÉ. Once again the darkness has come to the Doctor and they leave you wondering just what will become of him once againÉ
The episode starts out rather normal with the Doctor and the TARDIS landing on Mars and him exploring exactly just what timeline he has landed in. As he wanders he is found by a robot and brought back to base. Once there he cleverly puts all the pieces together and comes to the realisation of just where it is and what the future is for these people. This particular point in history is quite a pivotal point for EarthŐs space exploration history and it best not be disturbed. He decides it is best to just get out while he can and let events unfold as they naturally should, despite the CaptainŐs insistence on his presence for the duration... After all, the problems didnŐt begin until after the Doctor arrived. They naturally are quite suspicious of his presence.
I wonŐt go into details as to spoil the exact nature of the episode for any who have not seen it upon reading this, but the Doctor does his best to remain faithful to the timeline throughout, despite his presence there. I found myself almost distracted with other things while watching this episode. I was so excited for something new, but it was so ordinary, in a way. It was the end though, the very endÉ I could not help but pay every attention to the last few scenes of this story. Those were what truly counted. Those were what truly went towards the character of the Doctor. Every once in a while they create a situation that truly puts the DoctorŐs morals to the test and this was just one such story. Where was Donna Noble when she was really needed?
Then the Ňto be continuedÓ sort of way they lead you on with the Master. Leading you into something darker beyond what was now. Leading you to his inevitable ÔendŐ which will be the eleventh DoctorŐs beginning. All in 2010. The bastards. They really know how to keep us hanging on. Though the Master will return for Christmas, the new Doctor will not be until next year. Alas, soon enough we shall know. I hate to leave David Tennant, he has been the best Doctor since Tom Baker, in my opinion. (Even though in the short, Time Crash, it clearly demonstrates the Tenth DoctorŐs strong connection to the Fifth Doctor.) But as is the way with the show, we must welcome with open arms each new Doctor as it is the way of the series to do so. I suppose we should be grateful they are going with younger more interesting Doctors these days at least. Imagine if they started getting older and duller againÉ reverting to the likes of the first Doctor. The horror.
